Come Out and Support Your Libraries
On April 15th, 5:30 pm the Regina City Council will be debating and receiving presentations about the Regina Library Board's budget submission. We are not sure how soon after 5:30 pm it will happen, but it will be early in the evening.

The Friends of the Regina Public Library will be making a presentation to Regina City Council supporting the 3.9% increase and other items. For a transcript of our presentation, find the pdf file at www.regina.ca/meetings.php3 after April 11th.

Prior to attending the Council meeting, we would also encourage you to call your City Councillor and get his(her) opinion on the RPL Budget and encourage them to support the budget. For their telephone number either call 777-7000 or get it in the blue pages of the telephone book.

If you want to provide a letter of support for our libraries, you can have it recorded in the city's agenda for the evening if you provide the written or typed letter to City Hall by noon, April 10th. Either drop it off at the 15th Floor of City Hall or call 777-7262 and get details about sending it to them electronically or by fax.

Submission to the Regina Public School Board
On March 9th, we submitted a letter of support to the Public School Board in support of the schools that were being closed this year.

Get Involved with the FRPL
Why is involvement in FRPL important?

FRPL and Regina residents have been successful, and the Regina Library Branches that were threatened with closure, the Dunlop Art Gallery and the Prairie History Room are still going strong!

But there are on-going issues that continue to need attention. For example there are building maintenance and repairs that have not been addressed which are concerns in the long-term. Central Library and the Regina downtown could benefit from an enhancement of the Central Library building.

And there is continuing pressure to cut the taxes that go to libraries by people who don’t understand the value of libraries as learning centres in this modern age.

Aside from addressing these problems, active and positive public interest and involvement with libraries helps those who make decisions about libraries understand the needs of our diverse community and provide the best service. Groups and individuals have many skills and resources that can help keep our libraries open and help them continue to develop as democratic, accessible community, literacy and cultural centres.

One good thing the library closure crisis did was to bring people closer together as a community. So many people told stories about how the library played a crucial role in their childhood and in the life of their family. Hearing these stories has led to the creation of the library history book project.

Go ahead and get involved!

  1. Put your name on our contact list and become a member of FRPL.
  2. Come out to our FRPL Board meetings – they are open to all members. Join in by helping out with our phone tree, newsletter, events, strategic planning or history project.
  3. Invite FRPL to put an article in your newsletter, make a presentation or participate in events.
  4. Let us know about library-related news and events.

  9. Attend the City Council meeting concerning the Library budget that is held in April each year.
  10. Contact provincial and federal governments about their programs that could be supportive of libraries.
  11. Speak to your neighbours and friends and let them know that we need to continue to show our enthusiasm for libraries.
  12. Become involved in the FRPL History Project.
