Come Out and Support Your Libraries
On April 15th, 5:30 pm the Regina City Council will be debating and receiving presentations about the Regina Library Board's budget submission. We are not sure how soon after 5:30 pm it will happen, but it will be early in the evening.

The Friends of the Regina Public Library will be making a presentation to Regina City Council supporting the 3.9% increase and other items. For a transcript of our presentation, find the pdf file at www.regina.ca/meetings.php3 after April 11th.

Prior to attending the Council meeting, we would also encourage you to call your City Councillor and get his(her) opinion on the RPL Budget and encourage them to support the budget. For their telephone number either call 777-7000 or get it in the blue pages of the telephone book.

If you want to provide a letter of support for our libraries, you can have it recorded in the city's agenda for the evening if you provide the written or typed letter to City Hall by noon, April 10th. Either drop it off at the 15th Floor of City Hall or call 777-7262 and get details about sending it to them electronically or by fax.

ARCHIVE
The following information (including event sidebar) is made available as an archive of past events for the organization from 2008.

Access to Historical Archives to be Limited
The City has recently released its plan regarding the future of the City Archives. The Finance and Administration Committee will discuss this plan on May 8th. The plan calls for the cutting of the City Archivist position and reducing public service to by appointment only. The full plan may be found at: http://scaa.usask.ca/CORA_F-and-A_report.pdf Archivists in the city and across the province are concerned about these proposed changes, both in terms of cuts to public service and the very viability of the City's archiving function. FRPL is concerned about these proposed changes, as the City Archives are an important heritage and information resource in the province. Also, the City Archives are now home to various historical resources that were transferred to it from the Prairie History Room. To see the response that the Saskatchewan Council for Archives and Archivists (SCAA) has prepared to the City's proposals click here.
Also see the letter to the Mayor from the Prairie History & Genealogy Librarian. Further information may also be found at: http://scaa.usask.ca/cityregina.php

Letter of Invitation from RPL

April 24, 2007

When you think of your local public library, what comes to mind? Maybe it is books, or music, or programs such as storytimes, or maybe it is a quiet place to relax. Maybe nothing comes to mind because the Library you recall from your childhood just would not meet your present needs. More than books or programs, the libraries of tomorrow are special places that respond to the customer’s needs. This shift in attitude is transforming libraries to into more customer-centred destinations.

We would like to invite you to find out more about the library of tomorrow - your “Destination Library”. Please join us for a special presentation The Customer Centered Library: Innovations in Public Library Services and Facilities. Noted library expert and author Jeanne Goodrich will share her thoughts on the challenges public libraries of today face, and how libraries can be responsive to the needs and desires of the community within the confines of available financial resources. There is an exciting opportunity to transform our libraries into a “Destination of Choice.”

Central Branch Topic of Architectural Discussion
Please take the opportunity to attend this interesting and important event. The Mackenzie Art Gallery and the Dunlop Art Gallery present

The Ordinary Amazing Symposium: The Cultural Value of Modernist Architecture
May 25 to May 27, 2007.
RPL Film Theatre and the Mackenzie Art Gallery

To celebrate the exhibition, Telling Details: The Architecture of Clifford Wiens, this Symposium is a joint venture by the Dunlop Art Gallery and the Mackenzie Art Gallery.
The two keynote speakers are Clifford Wiens and Patricia Patkau, of the firm Patkau Associates (Winnipeg Centennial Library renewal, Bibliothèque nationale de Quebec, Montreal). This symposium will look at local modernist architecture, including the Central branch of the Regina Public Library. "Finally, with the Regina Public Library serving as one of the venues for the Symposium, the survival of this architectural gem in light of debates over the future of this facility will be an urgent subject for discussion."
