History Project Receives Funding Work is progressing well on the Library history book. Interviews are being conducted with former Library staff, and the Board minutes are being reviewed, starting back one hundred years ago! Many interesting stories are emerging!

To date, the History Project has received funding support from:
  • Regina Public Library
  • Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation
  • Saskatchewan Arts Board
The book is scheduled for publication in 2010

For more details se our activities page

Plans for Revamping Central Library The RPL is in the process of hiring an architectural firm to design a remodeled or new Central Library Building. FRPL has a representative on the committee selecting the architect. See the Terms of reference and call for Expressions of Interest at the RPL website http://www.reginalibrary.ca/blogs/index.php?blog=35
See a pdf containing press coverage here

There will be public consultations and an opportunity to contribute ideas for the project. For more information contact FRPL at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Prince of Wales Library at Core Ritchie A recommendation has been made to have the Prince of Wales Library relocate to a new building attached to the Core Ritchie Neighborhood Centre. See press coverage here.

Because this is City property, there will be a need to hold public consultations. These will possibly be held in April 2009. For the consultation dates, contact the Director of the Regina Public Library. http://www.reginalibrary.ca/blogs/index.php?blog=35 or contact FRPL at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

North Central Shared Facility Plans are moving ahead for the North Central Shared Facility to be located at the site of Scott Collegiate. The Albert Library is part of this project. The facility will provide services from a shared facility focused on youth and families. The project is a partnership between community, schools and service providers. See press coverage here.

The project held a Learning Café May 28, 2008 and a Design Festival October 4, 2008. Reports from these events are available on their website. http://www.northcentralsharedfacility.ca/index.html

While the shared facility idea has received positive support, City residents have expressed concern about the possible tearing down of the historic Scott Collegiate building.

The project now has a concept design. Next steps will be finding funding to complete the project, and planning to integrate the programs of the organizations that will be part of the facility. There will be public presentations about the project in the spring of 2009.

For further information, contact the North Central Community Association. http://www.nccaregina.ca/index.php/article/north_central_shared_facility/

Hours Changing at Libraries Starting April 1, 2009, hours will be changed at library locations. These changes are related to the Library Services Review. All Branches will open Friday mornings at 9:30 am, except Prince of Wales Branch. And, all Branches that used to open at 10:00 am will now open at 9:30 am.

Library Services Plan The RPL announced approval of a new Services Plan, in October 2009, based on a review of services and some public meetings. These identified 4 areas of activity: reading, viewing and listening pleasure, early literacy and making the library a comfortable place for lifelong learning. http://www.reginalibrary.ca/blogs/index.php?blog=35

A concern of some library users is how and when certain service decisions are being made, how and when they are communicated to the public, and how their impact is measured. For example, the decision to eliminate the Library video collection and only lend DVD’s.

Logotopia: The Library in Architecture, Art and the Imagination March 20, 2009 to May 3, 2009, Central Gallery

Organized by: Cambridge Galleries, Curated by Sascha Hastings.
Opening reception, Friday, March 20, 7:30 PM
Curator lectures by Sascha Hastings on Friday, March 20, 2:00 PM, Saskatoon Public Library and Saturday, March 21, 2:00 PM, Regina Public Library Film Theatre.

Logotopia (from the Ancient Greek logos, meaning “word” and topos, meaning “place”) presents a range of stunning library projects — Canadian and international, contemporary and historical, real and imaginary. The exhibition explores the library in its various typologies — the Universal Library, the National Library, the Community Library, and the Private Library, plus a section on Technology and the Future of Libraries. The exhibition takes readers to places and times as diverse as ancient Alexandria, contemporary Montreal, small-town Ontario, war-torn Baghdad and cyberspace.

Featured projects include Biblioteca Alexandria in Egypt by Snøhetta Architects, the Grande Bibliotheque in Montreal by Patkau Architects, the Hespeler Library in Cambridge by Alar Kongats Architects and Library of a Poet in Japan by Shigeru Ban Architects. In addition, Logotopia presents thematically related objects of art, literature, new media and pop culture.

The exhibition is accompanied by a 128 page illustrated publication including contributions by writers and artists as well as architects. For more information conatct the Dunlop Art Gallery.
