RPL 2012 Budget Deadline for submitting letters or presentations to City Council is 12 Noon on Thurs. Dec.8. The 2012 RPL budget asks for a 1.9$ increase. The budget includes increases for adminitration and branch development and a decrease in funds for staffing.

The budget process has been changed so that the RPL budget is appearing in the Fall, in advance of the year to which it applies.

On Monday April 11, 2011 City Council approved the 3.36% mill rate increase requested by the RPL Board for its 2011 budget. (City Council does not amend the Library budget, but either accepts or rejects the RPL's request for changes to the mill rate.)

In comparison, in 2010 the RPL received a 2.9% increase. This year, City Council approved its capital and operating budgets on January 18, 2011, resulting in a 4.0%increase for the 2011 City of Regina Budget.

Prince of Wales -Branch Opening A farewell barbeque was held at the old Prince of Wales Branch building, 2188 Broder Street, on Saturday June 25. Many current and former library patrons attended, as well as former staff, City Councillor Wade Murray and RPL Board Chair Darlene Hincks-Joehnck. The BBQ and food area were ably handled by RPL staff. Video interviews were taken for the FRPL History Book project by Wolf Sun Productions.
The new POW branch opened at the end of August , and an official opening was held on October 17, 2011.

New Central Library - Cultural Centre endorsed
On Monday June 13 City Council voted to endorse a proposal by the RPL Board for a Cultural Centre to replace the Central Branch. See documents and agenda for City Council meeting.

City support in principle was needed for the RPL to submit an application to the federal public private partnerships fund (P3Canada) by the end of June.

It will be important for the public to remain informed about the proposal, submit their views to the RPL Board and City Council, and participate fully in consultation processes.

Rebuilding the Slave Lake Library – One Donation at a Time The public library in the Town of Slave Lake was completely destroyed on Sunday, May 15, as a result of a huge forest fire. The beautiful new Rotary Club of Slave Lake Public Library had just opened in 2010.

About forty per cent of the Town is gone and support for those who lost their homes and possessions is pouring in via the Red Cross and other organizations. Support for the library is also pouring in. Libraries, bookstores, publishers and other library-related organizations have been in touch with Peace Library System to see how they can help the library rebuild. Here’s what you can do:

Donations of new or nearly new books (no more than two years old) can be shipped to Peace Library System headquarters where they will be catalogued, processed and stored until a temporary library opens in Slave Lake. Please ship prepaid to:
Peace Library System 8301 – 110 Street Grande Prairie, AB T8W 6T2 ATTN: Books for Slave Lake Library
Cash donations can be made by going to the library’s web page at http://www.slavelakelibrary.ab.ca and clicking on the “Make a Donation” link. The Slave Lake Library and Peace Library System thank all who make a contribution to rebuilding the library. For additional information, please contact Carol Downing, Assistant Director, at cdowning@peacelibrarysystem.ab.ca.

North Central Shared Facility On April 18 it was publicly announced that $38 million in capital funding has been promised for the North Central Shared Facility. Contributors are: the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education ($16.2 million), Regina Public Schools ($8.72 million), City of Regina ($8.8 million) and the Regina Public Library ($1.25 million). The school board and the city are also donating the land for the site. The new facility will use new learning techniques involving linking with the local community. It will have a focus on youth and families and be a partnership between community, schools and service providers.

The concept designs had been developed and planners have been working out how the programs to be offered at the facility would be integrated. Because of the lack of financial support from the federal government, the project will not be as extensive as envisioned in earlier designs. Detailed designs based on the available funds will now be developed.

The overall concepts have received general positive approval. There is some concern about the decision to demolish the historic Scott Collegiate building to make way for the new facility.

A new Albert Library Branch will be part of the facility. It will be innovative in that it will be in the same building as the school and the library will be shared between the school and the community. See more about the Shared Facility.
