History Book Project - Full Steam Ahead! Many interesting stories are emerging from the interviews with former Library staff and from the RPL Board minutes - starting back one hundred years ago!

To date, the History Project has received funding support from:
  • Regina Public Library
  • Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation
  • Saskatchewan Arts Board
  • Saskatchewan Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport - Building Pride Program
The book is scheduled for publication in 2012. For more details link to FRPL activities page
Provincial Budget  - 2010/2011 The provincial government provides a resource sharing grant to all public library systems in the province, which stayed the same as last year.  RPL receives $553,035, including just under $30,000 in targeted funding for initiatives that focus on library services to the aboriginal community. Other areas which showed an increase in provincial funding were for: CommunityNet(CNET); the Saskatchewan Integrated Library System (SILS); the transport of library materials among the cities headquatering the regional library systems; and, the grant program for lotteries, such as RPL's Home Lottery. (See RPL Library Director's Report )

North Central Shared Facility The Albert Library is part of the plans for for the North Central Shared Facility to be located at the site of Scott Collegiate. The facility will provide services from a shared facility focused on youth and families. The project is a partnership between community, schools and service providers.

In 2008, the project held a Learning Café on May 28 and a Design Festival on October 4. An Open House and BBQ was held on October 3, 2009 with displays and drawings of the new facility, and an opportunity to talk to project leaders and partner organizations.

A report on the Design Festival, the Conceptual Building Designs and some Sustainable Building Concepts are available on the project website. http://www.northcentralsharedfacility.ca/index.html

The shared facility idea has received general positive support, although some residents are concerned about the plans to tear down the historic Scott Collegiate to make way for the new facility. Partner organizations have been meeting to determine how the programs to be run in the facility can work together most effectively. Further development on the actual construction of the project is on hold until funding is firmed up.

Prince of Wales Library at Core Ritchie Prince of Wales Library will be relocated to a new building attached to the Core Ritchie Neighborhood Centre. Because it is City property, public consultations were held in April 2009 about the location. The location was approved by the public at that meeting and was subsequently formally approved by the City.

The architectural firm Resource Planning Group Inc. of Vancouver is leading the project. (See http://rpg.ca )

The Library held a second Public Meeting on October 7th, 2009. This was a visioning session to gather the ideas of community residents and RPL users about the library design.

Drawings for the design of the new Prince of Wales Branch were available for public viewing on Wednesday, March 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Core Ritchie Neighbourhood Centre Gym at 445 - 14th Avenue. The presentation and plans are available at  http://www.rpl.regina.sk.ca/pow/branchconcepts.html

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2010, and the new Branch will open in early 2011. The building will be funded from the RPL Home Lottery proceeds.

New Central Branch - Concept Designs Major changes to Central Branch are being planned. On April 29, 2009 the RPL announced that it had hired P3 Architecture Ltd.  (See http://www.p3arch.com ) and Harvard Developments Inc. (See http://www.harvard.ca ) of Regina to lead the redesign of Central Library. The plan will either replace or expand and renovate the current building. Currently a major mixed-use development is envisioned. http://www.rpl.regina.sk.ca/central_library/index.html

In June 2009, public consultations were held about visions for the Central Branch. In the summer of 2009 there was an opportunity to participate in an on-line questionnaire. In August some very basic ideas for options of what the block would look like were presented. Diagrams were shown that had features such as a tall building to the west of Knox-Metropolitan Church, a building encircling the Federal Building on Smith Street, a building encircling or replacing the Masonic Temple, an office tower / condo west of the current Central Library, and a building completely replacing the current Central Library building.

A further opportunity to comment on some more detailed concept designs was originally anticipated for late November.  However the design firm is taking needed extra time to work with library staff to ensure that the size and layout of space will function well to serve library patrons and serve well as a work environment for library staff.

In addition, because the project vision is large-scale, extra time is also needed to determine funding partners, partners who may wish to locate in the building, and especially to hold discussions with the organizations in the block whose buildings or land could be part of the project or affected by the project. These key players include Knox-Metropolitan United Church, the Masons and the federal government.

No date has been set for a public meeting to show the next phase of the project design.

Public input is needed as this could be a major development potentially changing the entire block bounded by Victoria Avenue, Lorne Street, 12th Avenue and Smith Street. It could affect the Masonic Temple, Knox-Metropolitan Church and the Federal Building.

The heritage value of the Central Branch has been cited by many people interested in heritage and architecture. (See "Regina Modernist Architecture on Display") and appreciation for the building is expressed by many Regina residents. Central Branch was highlighted in "The Ordinary Amazing Symposium:The Cultural Value of Modernist Architecture" held May 25 to May 27, 2007 in Regina. The Symposium was a joint venture by the Dunlop Art Gallery and the Mackenzie Art Gallery. (See conference details and http://ordinaryamazing.blogspot.com) Similar interest is being shown in buildings from this era in other locations. (See "The sixties turn 50" )

Library Recognition
RPL won the Stan Health Achievement in Literacy Award for 2010 from the Canadian Library Trustees Association in honour of the Learning Together program for English as a Second Language parents and children.

The Dunlop show Where were the Mothers? received considerable interest from highschool students.

The RPL Film Theatre was included in The Saskatchewan Book of Musts: The 101 Places Every Saskatchewanian MUST See, by D. Grant Black. (See Library Director's Report

SLA Conference & Libraries Matter Campaign The Saskatchewan Libraries Conference for 2010 "Diverse Communities: One Voice" was held May 6-8 in Regina. Excellent worlshops and speakers covered a wide range of topics. The event included the AGMs of the Saskatchewan Library Trustees Association and the Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA).(See 2010 conference)

The SLA has an Advocacy Committee and is conducting the Libraries Matter campaign to raise the profile of libraries. (See
Libraries Matter )
Library Services Plan The RPL announced approval of a new Services Plan, in October 2008, based on a review of services and some public meetings. These identified 4 areas of activity: reading, viewing and listening pleasure, early literacy and making the library a comfortable place for lifelong learning.
http://www.reginalibrary.ca/blogs/index.php?blog=35

The plan has generated many positive innovations and changes.

One concern of some library users is how and when certain service decisions are being made, how and when they are communicated to the public, and how their impact is measured. For example, the decision to eliminate the Library video collection and only lend DVD’s.

The plan has also resulted in changes to library staff positions.

Friends of the Dunlop Art Gallery Friends of the Dunlop Art Gallery introduced the Dunlop Advisory Board in the spring of 2008, consisting of members: Don List, Linda Payeur, Christine Ramsay and Rachelle Vader Knowles.
